Joris Roelofs
Born February 21, 1984 in Aix-en-Provence (France) and raised in Amsterdam (Netherlands), Joris Roelofs plays saxophones, clarinet, and bass clarinet. A member of the Vienna Art Orchestra from 2005—2010, Joris also plays lead alto in the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw in the Netherlands. He graduated with master’s degree in music from the Music at the Conservatory of Amsterdam in 2007. In 2001 Joris won the Pim Jacobs Price. In 2003 he was the first non-American to receive the International Association of Jazz Education’s (IAJE) Stan Getz/Clifford Brown Fellowship Award. The IAJE also honored Roelof with a First Level prize. In 2004 Joris won the 20,000 Euro first prize at the prestigious Deloitte Jazz Award competition in Holland. In 2008 he was selected for the Thelonious Monk International Saxophone Competition. Among others, Joris has played with Brad Mehldau, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Christina Branco, Lionel Loueke, Eric Harland, Lewis Nash, Aaron Goldberg, Ralph Peterson, James Carter, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, the WDR Big Band, Ari Hoenig, and Matt Penman. In 2010 Brad Mehldau invited Roelofs to perform with him at Carnegie Hall in New York and the Sanders Theatre in Boston. Mehldau’s group included Chris Potter, Joshua Redman, Chris Cheek, Greg Tardy, Sam Sadigursky, Timothy Andres, and Becca Stevens. Joris has played at a wide variety of international jazz festivals and jazz clubs, throughout the world.
